Ruling on ‘unlawful’ pay protection schemes could affect thousands of female workers

Local authorities and NHS trusts could face thousands of equal pay claims by female workers after a landmark ruling by the Court of Appeal yesterday.
The court ruled that pay protection schemes, introduced to top up the wages of male workers who would have faced pay cuts as a result of equal pay legislation, were unlawful if they perpetuated sex discrimination.
