A pay “pause” in Ireland’s public sector until well into 2009 and pay restraint in the private sector, are the key ingredients of a deal likely to emerge from the national pay talks by the end of the month.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen is understood to want a pay pause in the public sector until the end of 2009 in bid to ease the growing strain on the public finances.
