Prime minister Gordon Brown has asked the speaker of the House of Commons to look into why there is such a small proportion of female and ethnic minority MPs.
Michael Martin will convene a speaker’s conference, which brings together MPs from all parties to consider electoral issues and achieve consensus. The talks will be confidential.
