A proposed change to 'Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management' ignores the people development of the institute

Tim Wood’s suggestion (“Name calling”, Letters, 4 September) that the CIPD should be renamed the “Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management” – which at least would lose the term “personnel” – presents one huge challenge.
My beloved field of development is currently one of the words that makes up the institute’s title. However, Wood proposes a name that does not even recognise learning and development as being relevant to a potential new name. I find this to be a prevalent issue – it seems that there is a clear delineation between human resource management as process and human resource development as people. Yet it is obvious to me – but apparently not to everyone that I come into contact with – that people and process are part of the same arena.
