We have a vision: for the BBC to be a dynamic place to work, where people never stop learning and can stretch their creativity, imagination and expertise to create content and services that our audiences love and value. As the BBC’s training and development director, my particular focus is that people never stop learning, and that includes as many diverse people as possible having an opportunity to learn at the BBC. One of the ways we facilitate that is through the Extend scheme, a work placement programme for talented disabled people.
After a successful three-year pilot, Extend was established 10 years ago. It was created to help the BBC meet its target of increasing the number of disabled staff and enables people with disabilities to gain work experience. It improves their opportunities for securing future employment in the BBC and the rest of the broadcast industry.
