Irish unemployment still rising, but ‘job loss rate slowing’

The pace of job losses in Ireland appears to be slowing since it hit a peak in January, according to David Croughan, chief economist at the Irish Business and Employers Confederation.

Croughan was responding to last week’s Live Register figures, which showed that the number of people signing on exceeded 400,000 in May 2009 – almost double the 207,000 who were signing on in May 2008. The underlying unemployment rate rose from 11.4 per cent in April to 11.8 per cent last month.
