Milburn: “Britain’s got talent – yet elitism blocks access to professions”

Employers should change their recruitment and internship processes to help widen access to top professions, according to a report out today on social mobility. The report, by former minister Alan Milburn, says a new code of practice for internships, with a “kitemark” to identify the best, should be introduced to ensure opportunities are opened up to all. Employers should also monitor the socio-economic backgrounds of their workforce to help address the ‘closed shop’ mentality of many professions, including law, medicine and the senior civil service.
