Default retirement age is arbitrary, says Harriet Harman

The abolition of the UK’s default retirement age (DRA) moved a step closer yesterday as Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman signalled a “massive policy change” was in the offing.

Describing the DRA as “arbitrary”, Harman indicated that a fresh look at the law - which employers can use to force workers to retire at the age of 65 - was required to take into account the country’s active older workforce.

It’s untenable to have a normal retirement age in public-sector schemes that is significantly different from the state retirement age
