Cleveland Police plans to outsource 999 call operations

Cleveland Police has revealed that it will outsource the answering of 999 calls to a private company in a bid to overcome cost pressures.

The control room responsible for taking emergency calls is among the services being placed out for tender to three private firms, with current bidders including Reliance Security, Capgemini and Steria. Around 730 police staff are affected by the plan, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the country. The force hopes to save £20 million over 10 years via the move.
