Motivating future chief executives

Having a leader “in-waiting” is critical to the long-term success of firms. But how effective are companies’ succession plans and what drives and motivates the CEOs of tomorrow? Methodology Researchers interviewed 70 CEOs, chairmen, non-executive directors and HR directors to understand whether there are desirable drivers and characteristics for the next generation of CEOs and how to identify them. Interviewees were also asked what the impact of this was on succession planning.
