Councils slammed for £250,000 average severance pay

Council chief executives are picking up an average of £250,000 when they leave their posts early, according to a new report by the Audit Commission.

Three in every 10 outgoing chiefs received a pay-off over a 33-month period, with the 37 severance deals costing a total of £9.5 million.
