Meat industry workers exploited, report finds

Supermarkets have defended their vetting of suppliers after a damning report on working conditions in the meat industry was published last week. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said its inquiry uncovered “widespread evidence of the mistreatment and exploitation of migrant and agency workers in the meat and poultry processing sector”, which employs 88,000 people.Reports of physical and verbal abuse, a lack of proper health and safety protection and the mistreatment of pregnant staff were all areas of “particular concern”, said the report.
