Protection against caste discrimination could be coming to UK workplaces
Employers may be unfamiliar with the concept of “caste” discrimination in the workplace. Nevertheless, the Equality Act 2010, which recently received Royal Assent, has paved the way for this form of discrimination to become unlawful in the UK. The National Institute of Economic and Social Research is due to study the extent of caste discrimination in the UK and publish its findings this August. Depending on the government's response to this research, employers may need to start looking closer to home and consider caste issues alongside the existing strands of discrimination legislation.
