What should employers do if an employee facing dismissal threatens suicide?
Thankfully, threats of suicide at work are rare. But the recent upsurge of interest in the circumstances surrounding the apparent suicide of David Kelly – a government scientist found dead shortly after he was aggressively questioned by a Parliamentary committee in 2003 – raises the question of an employer’s potential liability if death is a possible consequence of disciplinary proceedings, or follows an injury at work.
