Criticism of public sector has gone too far
I heartily agree with the sentiments expressed by Alan Warner in “Be positive about the public sector”.We seem to forget that, as an “eminence of the state”, public-sector organisations are far more regulated than those in the private sector. Of course, this leads to more reliance on support services, so public servants can devote their time to us, the people they serve. The true impact of the cuts will not be immediately evident – but it goes far deeper than the axing of administrative roles. The trouble is, it just doesn’t add up. Where does the work go? Public-sector staff are so effectively performance managed that poor performance is simply not tolerated. I see people constantly going above and beyond the call of duty to deliver, working long hours and coming in at the weekend – NHS clinicians and administrators alike! In my private-sector employment, I have seen far more people in “donkey sanctuary” jobs than I have in the public sector.
