‘Work Opportunity Scheme’ raises union hackles

Unions in Ireland have sought an urgent meeting with the minister for social protection, Éamon Ó Cúiv, over his plans to offer those claiming unemployment benefit the opportunity to work on community and environmental projects.

Under the Work Opportunity Scheme, up to 10,000 people on the dole will be paid up to €210 (£175) per week for working 19.5 hours, extending to 40,000 people next year.
