Rooney: a typical talent problem?

I am watching the Wayne Rooney versus Sir Alex Ferguson saga with interest as it plays out in the grounds of Manchester United. Football clubs are fascinating organisations with theoretically unsustainable business models. They, like other companies, are totally reliant on the talent they can purchase and retain - but the prices they pay for football stars are astronomical and would render most businesses unable to continue.
