Birmingham prison officers may stage illegal walkout

The privatisation of Birmingham Prison has been condemned as “disgraceful” by trade unions, who may call for unlawful strike action over the decision.

The jail in the Midlands will be the first UK prison to be privatised, in a move that is designed to save money, improve performance and cut reoffending rates, justice secretary Kenneth Clarke announced yesterday.
