Handle with care

When my father was admitted to a nursing home two months ago, the financial crisis enveloping Britain’s biggest care home operator, Southern Cross, was just starting to surface in the business pages.

Now it is on the front pages. The Sun, hardly known as a critic of capitalism, called one care home landlord “despicable” for allegedly planning to “put D-Day veterans out on the streets”. Even the Daily Mail referred to Blackstone, the American venture capital company that grew Southern Cross, as “the shark who made a killing from care”.
