Internships
At a time when young people are struggling to get a toehold in the jobs market, internships can be a good thing. But such placements do have a dark side, especially when they are unpaid. Stories abound of employers taking advantage of graduates willing to work for free in order to break into their chosen industry. And lengthy unpaid internships – often requiring a move to London – can affect the diversity of candidates, as they tend to favour those with wealthy backgrounds or a base in the south east.
