Although this case involved a school uniform policy, the principles would apply equally in an employment context. The school prohibited cornrow (braided) hairstyles. A boy of Afro-Caribbean ethnicity, who had had cornrows since birth in line with a family tradition, was told about the policy on joining the school. He brought race and sex discrimination claims.
