Tips for successful remote working in the longer term

The need for remote working took many businesses by surprise when the government's lockdown measures were enforced, but for organisations looking to reassess what they put in place, the team at Parallels have collated some advice

The need for remote working solutions came suddenly for some businesses, many of which turned to consumer solutions to quickly roll out remote working capability. Now it looks like remote working might be with us for the longer term, and HR and IT teams are taking a second closer look at the solutions they put in place. So, if you’re reassessing your remote working solutions, here are some pointers that might help:

Keep it simple for IT

Firstly, you’re already working from home, so you don’t want to start over with a complex solution that takes time to install and configure. What’s needed is a secure and sustainable remote working solution that is fast and easy to deploy, manage and maintain. If you haven’t already thought of it, remote application delivery and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is a great option that allows employees to access any Windows application, along with their files and their desktops anywhere and on any device (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Thin Client and even from a browser).

Tip: Although it might sound complex, a solution to deliver virtual desktops and applications is fast and easy to implement. It can be rolled out in a couple of hours and employees get to use all their familiar applications and their usual desktops – just virtual versions of them.

Think about management and security

It’s a headache for IT to protect the company network, be GDPR compliant and keep all applications up to date with security software and patches on all employees’ devices individually. However, an application delivery solution like Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS) makes this simple as all data and programmes are stored in a central server, which is easily managed by IT from a central dashboard. Security is also guaranteed as the data does not actually ever leave the server but instead is only made available to employees as a virtual image.

Tip: Look for an application delivery or VDI solution that offers additional security features such as multi-factor authentication, granular filtering and advanced encryption protocols.

Enable true mobility

Long-term remote working also means flexible working as the nine-to-five rule is redundant. For true flexibility, staff need to be able to work away from their workstations, which means you need to offer them productive and stress-free mobile working on iOS and Android hand-held devices.

Tip: Business applications must be operable with the familiar tap and swipe touch gestures.

Consider features and licensing

Some application delivery solutions require a significant spend on expensive hardware, licences and software add-ons, but there are high quality and cost-effective offerings on the market, so have a look around and don’t assume the big brand names offer the best solutions.

Tip: Parallels provides a free and fully functional 30-day trial of Parallels RAS including 50 concurrent user licences.
