The best of HR: Julie Brounos' overhaul of c2c's L&D offering won her the CIPD People Management Award for outstanding student

What’s the secret of becoming an effective and award-winning people professional? For Julie Brounos, learning and development manager at train operator c2c, it comes down to three simple words: “Love your job.”

Brounos used the knowledge acquired during her CIPD Level 5 Diploma in L&D to revolutionise the way her business approached learning, moving away from a bureaucratic, paper-based system to something more responsive, measurable and effective.

The data-driven learning management solution she implemented provided “richer data sets” allowing for better reporting, particularly for safety-critical training. But most importantly, it gave the business’s 700 employees access to a huge range of learning, backed by a personal learning record that prompts greater reflection and can be aligned to performance management processes.

Managers are delighted with the visibility the function offers, and the ability to plan training throughout the year, targeting interventions where they are most needed.

“It was a challenging task but because it was so enjoyable it didn’t feel like a challenge,” says Brounos. “It was exciting to figure out how to streamline the L&D functionality. I was, and still am, so excited to see where we could take it.”
